About the Events

Leila Aboulela is a Sudanese-born writer whose work, written in English, has received critical acclaim and a high profile for its distinctive exploration of identity, migration and Islamic spirituality. Highlighting the challenges facing Muslims in Europe and “telling the stories of flawed complex characters who struggle to make choices using Muslim logic”, Aboulela’s work explores significant political issues. Her personal faith and the move, in her mid-twenties, from Sudan to Scotland are a major influence on her work.

The Grammar of the Hearts (Naḥw al-Qulub) of ʿAbd al-Karim al-Qushayri is the first texts of Sufi grammars, a genre of literature employing the lexicon and rules of Arabic grammar as a basis for explicating Sufi teachings. Dr Sheibani will introduce us to al-Qushayrī and the social and intellectual milieus that birthed the text, the content and goals of Sufi grammars, and the lessons we can learn from them today to guide our own spiritual development.

Paul Abdul Wadud Sutherland became a freelance writer in 2004. He has fifteen published collections and is editing seven others. He’s won literary awards; one of his poems helped promote the Olympics 2012, has won grants and participated in many projects. Every day during the month of Ramadan, and for ten days thereafter, British-Canadian poet Paul Abdul Wadud Sutherland composed a poem reflecting on some aspect of the greatness of the Holy Prophet (saaws) and the sira. Poems on the Life of the Prophet Muhammad is a collection that represents the distillation of his meditations during that intense and luminous period.

The Book of Spiritual Chivalry (Kitab al-Futuwwa) of Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami is a classic of the Islamic tradition. Like many authors before and after him, Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami demonstrates that ethical behaviour can only be cultivated through a sound spiritual vision, and that true spirituality is only manifest through sustained practice of the Sacred Law. In this session, Talal Al-Azem will present an overview of the work and reflect on the lessons we can glean from it for our lives today.
