Students from our Diploma in Contextual Islamic Studies and Leadership (CISLD) programme (Class of 2024) recently made the eagerly anticipated journey to Rome, Italy.
CISLD students were joined by Islamic Theology students from the University of Tübingen, with both delegations being hosted by the Lay Centre. This annual excursion is a highlight of, and concludes, the year-long course at Cambridge Muslim College. It includes guided tours of the Vatican’s majestic museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as the incredible privilege of guided tours and visits with important religious figures of the Catholic Church, providing a truly global perspective on religious studies.
Accompanied by their instructors, students engaged in a respectful dialogue with local religious figures, discussing the challenges and opportunities of interfaith understanding in contemporary society. This exchange was emblematic of the CISLD programme’s emphasis on equipping future Muslim leaders with the ability to navigate and engage thoughtfully with diverse religious and cultural contexts.
Dr. Omar Qureshi, Programme Lead for CISLD, emphasised the importance of such experiences in shaping compassionate and informed leaders who are well-prepared to serve their communities, while broadening their understanding of the global religious landscape.
As the students returned to Cambridge, they carried with them not only memories of Rome’s grandeur but also a renewed commitment to their studies and future roles as leaders. The Rome trip, much like the CISLD programme itself, proved to be a pivotal experience, blending academic rigour with real-world exposure.
Cambridge Muslim College is proud to support these enriching educational experiences, which are crucial in preparing the next generation of Muslim thinkers, scholars and leaders.
